Winter Weather Preparation

Prepare for winter storms with these tips for before, during, and after severe cold weather.

Winter storms can bring freezing temperatures, ice, and dangerous conditions to the Rio Grande Valley. While rare, these events can cause power outages and strain the electric grid. Being prepared can help keep your family safe.

Before the Storm

Create an Emergency Plan
  • If you have medical equipment that requires electricity or medicines that need refrigeration, plan for a backup power source
  • Identify the safest areas in your home to shelter
  • Establish an out-of-area contact for family members to check in with if separated
  • Make a plan for pets and livestock
  • Find plan ideas at ready.gov/plan
Stay Informed
Prepare Your Home
  • Fully charge all phones, tablets, and battery packs
  • Have flashlights and extra batteries ready
  • Stock up on non-perishable food and bottled water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Keep account numbers and important contact information accessible
  • Know how to manually open your garage door
  • Protect outdoor pipes and faucets with insulation
Prepare Your Vehicle
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full
  • Store blankets, water, and snacks in your vehicle
  • Check tire pressure and antifreeze levels
  • Keep a phone charger in your car

During the Storm

  • Follow instructions and safety warnings from local officials
  • Conserve energy when possible to reduce strain on the grid
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain cold temperatures
  • Never use outdoor grills, generators, or fuel-burning heaters indoors—they produce deadly carbon monoxide
  • If you lose power, unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges when electricity is restored
  • Check on elderly neighbors and family members

After the Storm

  • Continue to monitor communication channels for news and alerts
  • Check your home for damage, especially water pipes and roof
  • If you see our utility crews working, please move over or slow down for their safety
  • Report downed power lines immediately: (956) 983-6300 or 911
  • Only drive if necessary—roads may be icy or blocked
  • Document any property damage with photos for insurance claims
